Why is arteriosclerosis considered detrimental?

Arteriosclerosis is a condition characterized by the thickening and hardening of arterial walls, which primarily decreases the artery's ability to change lumen size. This loss of elasticity impairs the normal function of blood vessels, making it difficult for them to expand and contract as needed during varying conditions of blood flow and pressure.

As a result, the body may struggle to adequately regulate blood pressure and maintain efficient circulation, potentially leading to serious cardiovascular issues such as hypertension, ischemia, and increased risk for heart attacks and strokes. The diminished capacity for vascular responsiveness and adaptability in arteriosclerosis ultimately compromises overall cardiovascular health and increases the likelihood of various complications.
